DPI is the single most quoted mouse spec — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's exactly what it means, why it matters, and how to check your real number in half a minute.
DPI stands for dots per inch. It describes how many pixels (dots) your cursor moves on screen for every inch you physically move the mouse. A mouse set to 800 DPI moves the cursor 800 pixels per inch of hand movement; at 1600 DPI it moves twice as far for the same motion.
You'll sometimes see the term CPI (counts per inch), which is technically the more accurate name. For everyday purposes they mean the same thing, and "DPI" is what manufacturers and games use.
Quick definition: higher DPI = cursor travels further for the same hand movement = "faster" feeling mouse. Lower DPI = more hand movement per pixel = finer control.
For gaming, DPI sets how twitchy your aim feels. Competitive FPS players overwhelmingly choose lower DPI — typically 400 to 1600 — because it lets them make small, precise corrections. For productivity and design on a large or high-resolution display, a higher DPI can save your arm by covering more screen with less movement.
What actually matters is your effective sensitivity: DPI combined with your in-game sensitivity. Two players can feel identical at 400 DPI/high sens and 1600 DPI/low sens. That's why pros talk in cm/360 rather than raw DPI.
The number on the box is the stated DPI. Your real DPI can differ for a few reasons: sensor tolerance, software settings that override the hardware, or Windows "Enhance pointer precision" (mouse acceleration) quietly changing how far the cursor moves. Testing tells you what you're actually getting.
